Computer and the mechanical mind

Will Artificial Intelligence (AI) overpower human beings?

About the workshop

“If the computer can do everything that your brain can, which is, it can learn, it can correct itself, it can foresee much more than human beings can, its responses are instantaneous, because it is programmed that way. Then what is man?”

“Artificial intelligence can do most of the things that human beings can do – argue, have tremendous knowledge, much more than any of us. It will include British knowledge, European knowledge, French knowledge, Russian knowledge, all the Upanishads, all the Gitas, all the Bibles, the Korans, everything, and it will act – it will tell you what to eat, what not to eat, when to go to bed for your health, when you cannot have sex, everything you can do; it has already begun. And what is going to happen to the human brain if that machine can do everything I can do, except have sex or look at the stars? What is the point of the human being?”

“We human beings have been `programmed’ biologically, intellectually, emotionally, psychologically, through millions of years, and we repeat the pattern of the programme over and over again. We have stopped learning: and we must enquire if the human brain, which has been programmed for so many centuries, is capable of learning and immediately transforming itself into a totally different dimension. If we are not capable of that, the computer, which is much more capable, rapid and accurate, is going to take over the activities of the brain. This is not something casual, this is a very very serious, desperately serious matter.”

“When the body is not dictated to by taste, by the tongue, by the various forms of artificial stimulations, then the organism has its own intelligence.”

“Where there is love there is compassion. And where there is compassion there is supreme intelligence. Not the artificial intelligence of a computer, nor the artificial intelligence or powerful intelligence of thought. But when there is that quality of the brain, which has understood the whole business of conditioning and is free, and silence is part of that enormous sound of the universe, and where there is the end of sorrow, there is passion. Compassion is that passion, and it is that intelligence, and then beyond that there is total nothingness.”

J. Krishnamurti

With the advent of modern technology, we are becoming more and more dependent on machines, Computers and allied machines are taking over most of our functions. There is a real possibility that computer with its artificial intelligence (AI) can take complete control of human life dictating almost everything that human beings do. Then what is the future of human species? Will that be the end of human and beginning of mechanical civilisation? What is a human being? How does human intelligence function? In what ways the artificial intelligence is superior to human intelligence? What is thinking? How does it control our life? Is there an intelligence which is non-mechanical? Is there an aspect of human life which cannot be controlled by AI? All such and many more related questions will be explored during this workshop. Understanding the scope and limitation of human thinking along with AI and exploring the possibility of going beyond that will be the main focus of study in this workshop. By participating in this workshop, the participants are expected to learn about the nonmechanical activities in their life and put the mechanical activities in their right place. Various selections from Krishnamurti’s works relevant to the theme of this workshop will be provided as a reading material to each participant. Also links to the relevant videos of Krishnamurti will be provided. Each participant is expected to devote these two days fully to the study in order to benefit maximum from this workshop.
