About the workshop

“As the Eastern breeze That suddenly springs into being And calms the weary world, There in front of me Seated cross-legged, As the world knows Him In His yellow robes, simple and magnificent, Was the Teacher of Teachers”

“How do I help – I use that word with great caution – my brother? What is the root of all this? We talk of his becoming aware – but all that is verbal; it can be explained in different ways – the cause, the effect, and all the rest of it. After I explain all this, he says, ‘You have left me where I am’. And my intelligence, my affection, says ‘I can’t let him go’. Which means, am I putting pressure on him? I am not using any kind of pressure, or reward; my responsibility is that I can’t let another human being go. It is not the responsibility of duty and all that dreadful stuff. But it is the responsibility of intelligence to say all that to him. There is a tradition in India that one who is called the Maitreya Buddha took a vow that he would not become the ultimate Buddha until he had liberated other human beings too. You see, the tradition hasn’t changed anything. How can one, if one has that intelligence, that compassion, that love, which is not of a country, a person, an ideal or a saviour, transmit that purity to another?”

“As long as we consider ourselves as entities separate from society, we shall never understand either society or ourselves, and we shall always be in conflict with society. But if we can understand the process of desire which creates the environmental influences which condition us, then we can go beyond and discover that aloneness which is true individuality, that uniqueness which is a state of creation”

“You don’t have to spread my teachings, because if you don’t understand yourself, you cannot spread them. You may be able to buy and distribute a few books, but surely that is not at all so essential as to understand yourself. When you understand yourself, then you will spread understanding in the world, you will bring greater happiness to man. But if you are spreading somebody else’s teachings, you are creating more mischief, for then you are merely propagandists, and propaganda is not truth.”

J. Krishnamurti

It is a traditional belief that whenever humanity outgrows its culture, the World Teacher takes birth in a human body (Avatara) and gives a new Teaching suitable for the further unfoldment of human beings. It was believed that 2,500 years after Lord Buddha, i.e. in the 20th century, the humanity had reached a point where either human beings had to change radically or face self-extinction. And to change radically a new teaching was required which only the World Teacher could give. It was said that Krishnamurti was the person in whom the World Teacher manifested and gave this teaching to humanity. The life-story of Krishnamurti is the story of unfolding of this teaching. We shall be exploring this whole interesting story in this series of ten workshops. In this particular workshop, we shall be studying the historical background of this story. How did it begin and why only in Krishnamurti? Were there stages in this unfoldment? What is the critical point that necessitates this teaching? What is Krishnamurti’s Teaching and what are its salient features? What is its uniqueness? Is it for the whole of humanity or for the chosen few? All such questions will be taken up for study. The participants can also ask any questions related to the topic. Various selections from Krishnamurti’s works relevant to the theme of this workshop will be provided as a reading material to each participant. Also links to the relevant videos of Krishnamurti will be provided. Each participant is expected to devote these two days fully to the study in order to benefit maximum from this workshop.
